Learn to swim with the Steiner Swimming School in the city of Vienna

Our course program – swimming courses for children and adults

We have been introducing people of all ages to the joy of swimming for 40 years and have acquired a lot of experience teaching swimming to both children and adults. In addition, we carry everything that the modern swimmer needs in our specialty shop for swimming equipment located directly across from the Wiener Stadthallenbad.

We currently offer our swimming courses in five swimming pools in Vienna. You can find a brief overview of our course program here:

Children’s swimming courses

Toddler swimming courses

We teach swimming dwarfs from the age of two to three in cooperation with mum or dad and guide them to their first swimming movements. Together we explore the world of water and show the little ones the different ways to move around in the water and get to know their own limits.

The aim of the course is that if the children suddenly fall into the water, they will also find their way back to the safe shore.

Children’s swimming courses

Beginner swimming courses for children

Swimming is an important life skill! One cannot start swimming early enough, but group lessons are only practical for children starting at around 4 years of age. Our beginner swimming courses are aimed at children 4 or older who cannot keep afloat without the help of a swimming aid.

BEGINNER I – first immersion in the world of swimming

Prerequisite:

  • completed 4 years of age

Suitable for: All children from 4 to approx. 6 years who do not yet dare to dip their faces in the water.

The objectives of the course are

  • learning to dive,
  • Getting to know diving and balance exercises,
  • moving in shallow water without a flotation device,
  • to jump into the water with a flotation device.

Our beginner I swimming courses are aimed at children from 4 to approx. 6 years of age who do not yet dare to put their face in the water. The aim of the children’s swimming course is to take away the fear of diving and to teach the children the skills for locomotion with swimming aids in deep water. We motivate children in the course to dive, jump and experience the water with all their senses. We take the little ones by the hand so that they have the basics they need to become confident swimmers in the water.

BEGINNER II – first swimming strokes

Preconditions:

  • completed 4 years of age
  • Your child can already dive or dip their face into the water.
  • Your child already likes to move in deep water with a swimming aid.

Suitable for: All children from 4 to approx. 8 years of age who submerge or dip their face into the water, but cannot yet swim in deep water without a flotation device.
The objectives of the course are:

  • getting to know diving and balance exercises,
  • mastering short distances (approx. 5m) without a swimming aid in the prone and supine position,
  • learning the correct swimming movements in the prone and supine position and
  • jump from the edge of the pool.

Our beginner II swimming courses are aimed at children from 4 to approx. 8 years of age who like to dive and can move in the water with a swimming aid. The aim of the children’s swimming course is to learn the first real swimming strokes and to master short distances freely. We motivate children in the course to dive, jump and experience the water with all their senses. It is particularly important to offer children, especially at this age, as many movement experiences as possible in order to be able to build on them later in life. In our swimming courses for beginners II, we let children experience the element of water in a child-friendly, goal-oriented way and practice the first swimming movements of breaststroke, crawl and backstroke together.

The beginner swimming courses for children take place all year round in the Wiener Stadthallenbad, the Hallenbad Hütteldorf and the Hallenbad Döbling . In addition, we offer additional intensive swimming course dates during the holidays at the Federal Institute for the Blind and at the Vienna Stadthallenbad .

ANDEven though our course pools are well heated with a water temperature of 27-28 degrees, a few children get cold. For these children, we offer the possibility to borrow one of our stylish swimming school wetsuits for the entire duration of the course for a small rental fee. Thanks to the sleeveless construction and the highly flexible material, the children can participate in all exercises without restrictions despite the suit. Valid while stocks last!

Children’s swimming courses

Slightly advanced swimming courses for children

In our swimming courses, children who can already swim at least a few meters freely but cannot yet swim longer than five minutes without taking a break are considered “slightly advanced”.
This swimming course builds upon the basics learned in the beginners’ swimming course in order to reinforce what the children have already learned and to help them develop more confidence in the water.
The goal is for the children to be able to swim freely and safely over longer distances. In the slightly advanced swimming courses we not only improve the breaststroke and backstroke swimming techniques of the participating children, but also introduce the children to the basics of the other swimming styles in order to lay the foundations for their further swimming development.

Slightly advanced I – first lengths of swimming

In order to consolidate what has been learned and thus develop more confidence and self-confidence, this swimming course further builds on the basics of the Beginner I and Beginner II course.

Requirements:

  • completed 4 years of age
  • Your child can already dive and
  • Swim 5 meters in the prone and supine position without a flotation device.

Suitable for: All children from 4 to approx. 8 years old who dive and can already swim several meters freely.

The objectives of the course are:

  • Swim 25 meters on your stomach and back without a flotation device,
  • various jumps (e.g. head dive) from the edge of the pool,
  • Deep and distance diving in shallow water and
  • Deepening of already learned swimming movements in the prone and supine position.

Our slightly advanced I swimming courses are aimed at children from 4 to approx. 8 years of age, who can swim several meters freely and without a swimming aid. The aim of this children’s swimming course is to be able to cross the length of a 25-metre swimming pool without a swimming aid and without a break.

Intermediate II – swim longer distances in different styles

Requirements:

  • Reached 6 years of age
  • Your child can already dive and jump into the water without help.
  • Your child is already swimming the length of a 25-metre swimming pool in the prone and supine position without a buoyancy aid and without holding on.

Suitable for: All children from approx. 6 to approx. 10 years old who can dive, jump into the water and cross the length of a 25-metre swimming pool in the prone and supine position without a buoyancy aid.

The objectives of the course are:

  • Swimming for 5 minutes without a break,
  • deep and distance diving in shallow water,
  • get to know different jumps from different heights and
  • learning correct swimming techniques in the rough form (crawl, backstroke, breaststroke).

In our Slightly Advanced II courses, the goal is to be able to swim freely and safely over longer distances. In these swimming courses, we improve the crawl, breaststroke and backstroke swimming technique of the participating children, but also let the children get to know all other swimming styles and lay a foundation for further swimming development.

As additional motivation, the exam for an Austrian swimming badge can also be taken in the course of an additional exam date.

The children’s swimming courses for slightly advanced swimmers take place all year round in the Vienna Stadthallenbad, in the pool of the Federal Institute for the Blind, in the Hütteldorfer Bad and in the Döbling indoor pool . Swimming courses for adults and teenagers

Swimming courses for adult beginners and anxious swimmers

It is not self-evident that everyone is able to swim as an adult. People are often convinced that they are the only one who does not yet know how to swim – but studies show that 25% of adults cannot swim or are not confident in the water.

According to the motto “It is never too late!”, adults can also learn to swim with a little perseverance.

Our team is prepared to introduce those who are water shy to the element of water. With an abundance of patience and empathy we bring learners closer to the beauty of the world of water. After 40 years of experience, we know what we are doing. Countless ex-beginners confirm how nice it is to not have to make excuses for not going into the water on vacation and to just be able to confidently go to the pool and train for fitness reasons.

Anxious swimmers will also be able to shake off their deep fear of the water and learn to swim safely and confidently in our courses. The hardest part is making the decision to learn to swim and contacting us. Afterwards, we will accompany you and support you the rest of the way.

The adult swimming courses for beginners take place all year round in the Vienna Stadthallenbad, in the pool of the Federal Institute for the Blind, in the Hütteldorf indoor pool (Waldbad Penzing) and in the Döblinger Bad .

Basic front crawl courses for beginners

Most of our customers are interested in signing up for courses where they can learn how to swim front crawl. In our basic front crawl courses we offer you the opportunity to learn this unique and healthy way of swimming. But our course is so much more!

We are not simply teaching front crawl technique, but we are providing extensive technical training as a basis for improving all swimming strokes with a focus on front crawl swimming. It is the ability to have a repertoire of swimming strokes that distinguishes a person who is just swimming from a real swimmer. Only those who have mastered all strokes can train efficiently.

This course is suitable for confident swimmers (breaststroke or backstroke) who either cannot swim the front crawl at all or who struggle with technique or breathing, so that they cannot crawl for longer distances. This course is ideal if you want to learn how to swim the front crawl properly.

The crawl swimming courses for adults take place all year round in the Vienna Stadthallenbad, in the pool of the Federal Institute for the Blind, in the Hütteldorfer Bad (Waldbad Penzing) and in the Döblinger Bad . In addition, we offer additional intensive crawl swimming courses during the holidays.

We not only teach triathletes, swimming enthusiasts and all those who want to become one the most efficient front crawl technique, but we also offer as many different training stimuli in order to make training as comprehensive and varied as possible.

In addition, we do not just have Ironman athletes in our “perfection” courses: Many of our course participants started out interested in swimming in general and simply wanted to learn to swim better before discovering their enthusiasm for this wonderful sport. Whether you are looking for improving work-life-balance, getting rid of those love handles or simply looking for a great way to keep fit. Swimming is undoubtedly one of the healthiest sports out there.

Our team consists of both former and active competitive swimmers who enjoy passing on their years of experience to our students.

Dolphin swimming courses

Immerse yourself in the ultimate discipline of swimming! Our dolphin swimming courses are suitable for experienced swimmers (kraul knowledge of advantage) who really want to get a lot out of the water.

Dolphin swimming/butterfly swimming is the youngest of the four swimming ranges: Developed in the 1930s by David Armbruster, dolphin swimming was only recognized by the FINA World Swimming Federation in 1953. Since then, dolphin swimming has exerted an undisturbed fascination for all pool visitors. This powerful and elegant way of moving through the water makes you the “King Of The Pool”!

In our taster course Dolphin Swimming we want to introduce you to the basics of this type of swimming and give you an overview of the Do’s and Dont’s. Dolphin swimming can be an enrichment for your swimming training if exercised properly and offers an enormously strong training stimulus. Nevertheless, it is particularly important to master a clean swimming technique when swimming dolphins, as it otherwise carries a high risk of injury. We’ll show you what’s important!

Proper back swimming

Backswimming is the healthiest way to move through the water. Backswimming has been recommended for decades by doctors and orthopedists to relieve many physical ailments. The horizontal position in the water completely relieves the spine, similar to the claw swimming. The intervertebral discs, which are usually heavily loaded in everyday life, can relax again.

A special feature of back swimming is the strain on the posterior back muscles during arm movement. These muscles are not trained so effectively in any other swimming style. In everyday life, we usually strain the pectoral muscles, which causes many problems in the back and shoulder belt. Regular back swimming can prevent action and restore physical balance.

Especially for experienced triathletes and claw swimmers, a more intensive preoccupation with this often unloved and neglected swimming situation is worthwhile. Back swimming is one of the best preventive measures against recurring shoulder problems!

Professional breaststroke

Breaststroke has undergone a very big transformation in recent decades. In swimming, the classic frog swimming has been further developed into an aggressive dynamic swimming style, also due to many rule changes. Today, with fewer but more powerful movements, you can rush through the water much faster than before. While the world record for the 100 m distance in 1972 was still 1 minute and 5 seconds, Adam Peaty, the current world record holder on the breaststroke, ploughed to the finish in 56.88 seconds in 2019.

Due to the further development to a dynamic wave movement, this breaststroke has gained many more exciting aspects. In its modern version today, it is an intensive full-body load.

In our taster course for athletic breaststroke, we expand your repertoire of movements, and give an insight into the core elements and differences of modern, sporty breaststroke to the classic frog style.

Group lessons for preschools and schools

We also offer our full swimming course program for preschools, schools and after-school groups.
In our experience, we have observed that early swimming support for preschool children has a very positive effect on children’s motor and social skills. In addition to the fact that the children learn to swim, regular swimming courses strengthen the muscles, improves breathing and, above all, gives the children self-confidence.

There are already big differences between preschool children regarding the ability to swim: some go swimming with their parents every weekend or may have learned to swim already, others may not yet have had much experience with the element of water at all. In our swimming courses for preschools we also work in small groups in order to be able to individually address the skills and needs of each child.

It is a good idea for school children to have an opportunity for swimming lessons before compulsory school swimming starts.

Individual lessons and video analysis

For individualists – individual lessons

For those who would prefer more individualized training, we also offer private lessons by appointment. Individual support is particularly suitable if you have special training requirements or would like to train extremely intensively. In individual training it is possible to fix certain technical issues more quickly and to respond to the needs of the swimming student on a higher level.

Individual lessons by appointment
Duration of the lesson either 30 or 60 minutes

We recommend 30-minute sessions for children because experience has shown that this is the limit of their concentration and stamina for individualized training. For sporty teenagers and adults we recommend 60-minute sessions.

Individual lessons can take place by appointment in the Wiener Stadthallenbad and in the Hütteldorfer Bad (Waldbad Penzing).

For perfectionists – video analysis

One of the biggest difficulties with swimming is that you cannot see your own movements and have to rely on your own perception of them and the observations of the trainer.
Video recordings taken above and below the surface of the water give you an objective view of your movements which can be compared with your own impressions and used to better assess your technique and optimize it faster.

Individual lessons by appointment.
Duration of the session: 75 min.

Video analyses can take place by arrangement in the Wiener Stadthallenbad .
